Iberia Parish Deputies are investigating a drowning in the Bayou Teche that started as a suspicious person incident.

Shortly before 8:30 Wednesday evening, deputies say they responded to the 3900 block of Northside Road in reference to a possible drowning.  The reporting person advised deputies that they had confronted a suspicious man in the backyard of their home.  After confronting the unknown man, he allegedly fled from the homeowner and jumped into the Bayou Teche in an apparent attempt to get away.

The homeowner told deputies that he watched the man swim for about a hundred yards before he went under the water and never resurfaced.  Shortly after 10:00 p.m. the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit recovered the body of the unknown man.

The body has been released to the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office to determine the identity and notify the next-of-kin.
