Acadiana students honored at Cox Heroes event

Posted: Updated:

Cox Communications honored 47 Acadiana students, grades Pre-K through 12, for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity at the 8th Annual Cox Inspirational Heroes Awards & Recognition Ceremony today.

The event was held at River Oaks Catering and Event Center.

Cox Inspirational Heroes, from the parishes of Acadia, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion, were accompanied by their parents or guardians, teachers and school administrators.

The public, private and parochial schools in Cox's six-parish Acadiana footprint were invited to submit the name of one student who has inspired others through their courage and determination in the face of physical, emotional, psychological, educational or social challenges faced daily.

"These students may not be the valedictorian or the star quarterback. They may not be the ones who usually get the recognition, but they are the unsung heroes who have overcome some kind of a challenge with a smile on their face," said Julie Simon-Dronet, vice president for the Cox Acadiana Market. "I guarantee that this event will be inspiring. We will have some laughs, and we will have some tears. We are very excited to celebrate these children for accepting their challenges with a positive attitude."

Many common threads are woven through our heroes' bios this year. They help others and are described as going out of their way to make those around them feel special. They are also described as humble, talented, role models and as faithful friends and family members.

A central theme of the event is taken from a quote by Booker T. Washington: "Success is measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles that one has overcome while trying to succeed." A short bio will be read aloud for each hero as he or she is honored on stage. Each student will receive a certificate of achievement and a commemorative Cox Inspirational Heroes plaque.

"Although this event is to recognize some amazing students, we also will pay tribute to their teachers, school administrators, parents and guardians. We know that they've helped shape the lives of these children by offering them words of encouragement and praise, and in some cases, a family," Dronet said.
