City plans improvements to Mississippi riverfront

Posted: Updated:

VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - One Mississippi city is considering improvements to its riverfront.

The Vicksburg Post reports the city will pay $80,000 to a New Orleans architectural firm, Eskew Dumez Ripple, to propose ways to spruce up its frontage along the Yazoo River Diversion Canal and the Mississippi River.

The city already plans better lighting, benches, landscaping and planters, additional floodwall murals, a gazebo with covered seating and directional signs.

Mayor George Flaggs says further improvements could come from a $55 million capital improvements program that he wants to fund through borrowing that he proposes repaying through a 1-cent sales tax.

The city's comprehensive plan proposes a riverfront park with walking trails. Flaggs and city officials met with the firm and toured the New Orleans riverfront last year for ideas.
