St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum joined LA Wildlife and Fisheries for some hands-on training with the Louisiana black bear.

Today the sheriff accompanied agents to a den of a mother and her two cubs. During the visit, the mother was equipped with a GPS tracking collar and the two cubs were chipped.

The photo of the cubs, while cute, serves a bigger purpose to those living and working near black bear habitats in St. Mary Parish.

The partnership between the two agencies, LDWF says, will provide deputies in St. Mary Parish with training on how to handle complaints involving black bears.

The training will be helpful to deputies, residents of St. Mary Parish, and the black bear population.

St. Mary Parish along with areas of Iberia Parish are the most common areas to see black bears in Acadiana but their habitat spans most of Louisiana and portions of Mississippi.
