Vernon Correctional Facility to close

The Vernon Correctional Facility will close at the end of this month, Sheriff John "Sam" Craft has announced.

"It is with great regret that a decision has been made to cease operations at the Vernon Correctional Facility on March 31, 2018," the sheriff wrote. "We have thoroughly investigated every possible avenue to avoid closing the facility. With the number of inmates that we currently house, (201 as of today) it is no longer financially feasible to remain open."

Craft says his research indicates that his facility would need at least 350 inmates to break even. He says that Louisiana sheriff's are underpaid by about $10 per day per inmate, and the state plans to cut their per diem by another $5 in the proposed budget. These facts are "major factors in a decision that has been months in the making."

The state will review the jail's rosters over the next few weeks to determine where inmates will be transferred, he said.

As far as personnel go, several current employees will be able to retire, he said.

"I am diligently working to reassign as many VCF employees as possible," Craft wrote.
