An 11-year-old child was shot in the leg Sunday afternoon in Rayne, says Rayne Chief of Police Carroll J. Stelly.

The shooting happened at about 4:40 p.m. in the 900 block of Reynolds Street, the chief said.

The child was transported to Lafayette General where she was treated and released.  Witness statements indicate that two groups of men were having a fight that escalated with multiple people firing handguns.

The child was a bystander and not believed to be the intended target.  Investigators have identified several suspects, both juvenile and adult, and are in the process of submitting arrest warrant applications to a judge, the chief said.

Stelly said arrests are imminent, but asks anyone with information to call Detective Richard Gray at 337-393-2930 or Acadia Parish Crimestoppers at 789-TIPS. Callers could receive up to a $1,000 cash reward and callers will remain anonymous.
