"What's Your Story": Finding an adventurer at Avery Island

Posted: Updated:

In this week's "What's Your Story" adventure, it was off to the marshy bayous of Avery Island.

And after another less than fruitful start looking for a story, we finally found success outside of the Avery Island Tabasco Plant with Teresa Hering.

One thing we found about Teresa is that she is full of stories to tell.

" I was an accountant and I was tired of accounting," Teresa explains of one of her many adventures. "So, on my 51st birthday, I wanted to learn to drive big rigs."

A self-described vagabond, Teresa started her road journey driving big rigs across the country. Hering says she delivered frozen food across the country for eight years and racked up a million miles. But that job was far from being the first time she felt compelled to get out.

Teresa says she also had the chance to work on a crab processing boat in Alaska. "I literally got knocked over by an eagle."

Now retired, Hering hasn't lost a step while wandering the country with her canine travel companion.

Visiting Louisiana for Mardi Gras, she's expected to be on her way soon to visit family in Texas and take care of other essentials.

" Well, I'm headed back toward Texas to visit Aunts and Uncles, and then on to Arizona to pay taxes you know how that is got to pay the government something. Then I'm on to Acadia National Park in Maine and on into Canada."

Despite all of her wandering and love for adventure the biggest thing that keeps her on the road is the people she meets.

"You can buy all the souvenirs you want and take all the pictures you want," Hering explains. "But when you talk to the people,  that's your true treasure."

Before we left Teresa to take the tour of the Tabasco factory, she left us with one singular piece of advice.

"The past has already happened and the future never gets here, so all you have is the present. Go ahead and open it."

We'll be taking that advice as we go about our own adventures.

Next week, our Acadiana adventure continues in South Lafayette.
