LAFAYETTE -

Six people are safe after their building caught fire overnight with two of the people jumping out of a second-story bedroom window.

Lafayette firefighters responded to the fire in the 1000 block of East Vermilion Street at 2:38 a.m. after receiving a 911 call about heavy smoke inside a two-story building.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the six tenants were outside the building, and the second story was completely engulfed in flames.

The firefighters contained the fire 40 minutes after their arrival, according to a spokesman with the Lafayette Fire Department.

Fire investigators say someone on the second floor noticed the smoke and alerted the others. There were five people upstairs and one person downstairs. Those upstairs escaped from an exit door, and two of them jumped from their bedroom windows.

The spokesman says no one was injured.

The building, which occupied a boxing gym downstairs and living quarters upstairs, sustained heavy fire damage.

Investigators say the fire started in the kitchen after someone left a pot on the stove unattended. The fire quickly spread throughout the kitchen.

The cause of the fire was ruled an accident, the spokesman says.
