BATON ROUGE, La.- As Caleb Gilbert pitched 7.2 brilliant shutout innings, the No. 14 LSU baseball team capitalized on two-out hitting, going 8-for-16, and used a six-run fifth inning to defeat Sacred Heart, 7-0, Saturday night at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

LSU improves to 7-4 on the season, while Sacred Heart falls to 2-3.

The Tigers will be back in action with a game against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The game will be available online through SEC Network+, which is accessible through Watch ESPN and the Watch ESPN app.

Freshman right-hander AJ Labas will make his collegiate debut starting on the mound for the Tigers, and Southeastern will start right-hander Kade Granier.

“Caleb just went out and executed our plan to perfection,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Their hitters really didn’t threaten him, they weren’t hitting balls hard against him.  I just thought he was masterful, and it’s a good thing he was, because it was a tight ball game until the bottom of the fifth. Our hitters started getting more aggressive against the breaking ball; we attacked it with authority and got a lot of clutch hits to score six in that one inning.”

Gilbert (1-0) had seven strikeouts, which tied his career high set against Oregon State in the College World Series last season. He pitched 7.2 innings of scoreless baseball and only allowed four hits to earn the win. Matthew Beck blanked the Pioneers out of the bullpen to complete the shutout for LSU.

James Taubl (0-2) was charged with the loss for Sacred Heart. He gave up five runs on nine hits over 4.2 innings.

The game was scoreless through 4.5 innings, but the Tigers found momentum with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Designated hitter Austin Bain doubled with nobody on and two out to set the stage for the six-run inning.

With Bain on second, catcher Hunter Feduccia singled, which allowed Bain to break the scoreless tie. Left fielder Beau Jordan slammed a triple into left field to score Feduccia from first. Jordan came home on a single from third baseman Jake Slaughter to extend the LSU lead to 3-0.

Left fielder Nick Webre continued the two-out rally with a double, and first baseman Bryce Jordan followed with a two-RBI single to left field, driving in Slaughter and Webre to bring the score to 5-0.

LSU capped off its six-run fifth inning when second baseman Brandt Broussard ripped a single up the middle to score Bryce Jordan.

To lead off the bottom of the seventh, Webre doubled down the right field line. The next two batters drew walks, and with one out, centerfielder Antoine Duplantis ripped a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Webre for the final Tiger run.
