MORGAN CITY -

Morgan City police arrested three suspects last night in connection with a fatal shooting hours earlier.

At 9:24 a.m., officers responded to a complaint of shots being fired in the area of Maine Street.

Upon their arrival, they discovered 21-year-old Nhirobi Dewey suffering from a single gunshot wound. Police say he died at the scene.

A spokesman with the Morgan City Police Department says the shooting happened during a drug deal and attempted robbery. Dewey allegedly pulled out a handgun during a robbery attempt, and then 18-year-old Dasmine Miller, of Gray, allegedly shot and killed him. Investigators believe 24-year-old Brian Mitchell, of Gray, also shot and wounded 21-year-old Nyjul Hillebrandt of Morgan City.

Police say Hillebrandt then fled the scene and attempted to conceal evidence of the crime. He was later located at a Terrebonne Parish hospital where he was being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. The 21-year-old suspect was detained with the assistance of Terrebonne Parish authorities and later transported to the Morgan City Police Department.

After responding to the initial call, witnesses directed authorities to the area of Brashear Avenue where they located Miller and Mitchell hiding inside a hotel room, according to the police spokesman.

During a search of numerous crime scenes, the suspected weapons involved, along with marijuana and other paraphernalia, were located and seized, police say.  Detectives with the St. Mary Sheriff's Office assisted in the search.

Miller is facing charges of manslaughter, attempted second-degree murder, possession of marijuana, violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance law in a drug-free zone, and illegal carrying of weapons.

Mitchell is facing charges of principal to manslaughter, obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana, and violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance law in a drug-free zone.

Hillebrandt is facing charges of theft under $1,000 and obstruction of justice.

All three suspects were booked into the Morgan City Jail.

The investigation is ongoing. If you have any information about the crime, call the Morgan City Police Department Detective Division at (985)380-4605.
