St. Landry Parish -

A Eunice woman is dead, and two others are in critical condition following a crash on LA 10 in St. Landry Parish yesterday.
Shortly before 6:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a three-vehicle crash on LA 10 near Ollie Street.

The crash claimed the life of 73-year-old Mary Chapman of Eunice.

Troopers say the driver of a Hyundai Sonata was traveling west on LA 10 when they slowed down for another vehicle that was stopped in the roadway. A Freightliner box truck traveling behind the Sonata swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid striking the Sonata. However, the Freightliner struck the rear left side of the Sonata and crossed into the eastbound lane where it struck a Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Chapman was a rear passenger in the Trailblazer. A state police spokesman says she was wearing a seatbelt, but was killed in the crash.

The driver of the Trailblazer and another passenger sustained critical injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

The drivers of the Sonata and Freightliner were not injured.

The spokesman says impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, and the drivers of the Sonata and Freightliner both voluntarily submitted to chemical tests, which they passed.

Troopers are working on obtaining a toxicology test from the driver of the Trailblazer, but impairment is not suspected on their behalf either, the spokesman says.

The driver of the Freightliner was cited for following too close.

The crash remains under investigation.
