Michigan Beats Cajuns in California Friday

Posted: Updated:

FULLERTON, Calif. Three early runs held up for No. 23 Michigan in a 3-1 win over 17th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball on Friday in the Judi Garman Classic.

The Wolverines (12-6) led off the game with a home run and added a pair of unearned runs in the second inning to reach its offensive production.

Louisiana (11-4) received 5-1/3 combined innings of scoreless relief from Casey Dixon and Carrie Boswell to hold Michigan the remainder of the contest.

A run crossed for the Ragin’ Cajuns in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Casidy Chaumont. Michigan’s Meghan Beaubien worked a scoreless seventh inning to close the contest.

Louisiana competed away from Lamson Park for the first time in the Gerry Glasco era and made its first appearance at the Judi Garman Classic since March 2011.

Kara Gremillion extended her hitting streak to three games with a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth inning. She moved up on a wild pitch and later scored the Ragin’ Cajuns run off Chaumont’s sacrifice fly to the wall in left field.

Four other Ragin’ Cajuns posted a hit including Brittany Rodriguez who extended her season-best hitting streak to four games.

Dixon’s 3-1/3 innings of scoreless relief was highlighted by working out of a first and third with no outs situation in the third inning.

Boswell also did her part in holding the Wolverines off the scoreboard, stranding a runner in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh inning.

Michigan’s Faith Canfield, who wound up with all three of the squad’s RBI, opened the scoring hitting solo home run on the game’s first pitch from Summer Ellyson.

Louisiana put two on the base path in an attempt to answer in the bottom of the first as Alissa Dalton singled and Gremillion walked. Wolverines starting pitcher Sarah Schaefer got a ground ball and pop up to escape the threat.

The first two Wolverines reached in the second inning (walk, error), then Ellyson retired the next two. However, Canfield came through with a bouncing single up the middle to score the runners and extended the lead to 3-0.

The remainder of the contest featured matching scoreless frames from both pitching staffs until Gremilion’s leadoff single in the sixth inning led to Chaumont’s sacrifice fly that trimmed the Ragin’ Cajuns deficit to 3-1.

No. 17 Louisiana continues play at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., on Saturday with a pair of evening matchups on Field 2 at Anderson Family Field Complex.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are scheduled to meet Iowa at 7:30 p.m. (CST) followed by a matchup with Michigan State at 10 p.m. (CST).
