Lafayette Parish administrators recognize the significance of the walkout, according to a spokesperson for the school system.

Students in all schools will be allowed to participate peacefully in the 17-minute walk out without fear of disciplinary consequences. The schools’ participation in the 17-minute walkout is to commemorate the 17 students and teachers killed last month at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
