Lafayette school changing lives outside of the classroom

One Lafayette school is going beyond the classroom walls, by helping their students. 

The Church Academy- Lafayette opened its doors in October and have opened the doors of opportunity to a community. 

"The school came out of a need for the kids that we have been working with for 15 years at Bridge Ministry,"principal Joel Greene said. 

She added, "We decided they just needed a little more time and a change in environment." 

Bridge ministries is a non profit organization that revitalizes and helps under resource neighborhoods. 

"What we're trying to do is change what poverty is," Greene said." By educating them (students) and giving them the components of being Christ like, then we can ensure all great things will happen to them. " 

Wednesday morning the school held its first annual Black History Program. However, the lessons go beyond the classroom.

The school offers after school tutoring, bible study, and family services. The group not only built resources for north Lafayette , but trust

"It means that my child will be well rounded," Brittany Boatner said. Boatner's child attends school at The Church Academy and say's it's made a difference in her child's life. 

"It means that he wont just be stuck in his own little bubble. He'll know about his community. He will know about his culture. He'll actually grow up with the attitude of not just taking from the community, but giving  back as well too, " Boatner said

The students say they're seeing progress within themselves and hoping to see that same progress within the community.  

"I want to set a good example so people can follow you and do the right thing ,instead of doing the wrong thing," student Thaddius Lewis said.
