Opelousas seeks Civic Center improvements

Posted: Updated:

Renovations could soon be coming to the Opelousas Civic Center property and city leaders say they're looking to the budget to help make those repairs.

Potholes, poor lighting, and security cameras are some of the repairs that the Opelousas City Government is looking to make outside the Opelousas Civic Center.

"What we're focused on is basically life safety issues," Chief Administrative Officer Rod Sias said. "What we're trying to do is eliminate risks within the city."

The city leases the Civic Center property from the State Department of Agriculture. Under that lease, the city is responsible for the property's upkeep.
Sias estimates the work may cost thousands of dollars but will make the civic center complex safer.

"We're not waiting until someone hurts themselves," Sias said. " We're trying to be proactive with this. We can't find out how much things cost until the council gives us authority to secure those bids and estimates."

Repairs will be discussed at the next budget committee meeting.
