Alexandria Police have arrested a local couple and accused them of throwing their newborn baby in the garbage.

The baby is on life support, police say.

The investigation began last Wednesday when Alexandria Police were called to a Bush Avenue home. Emergency Medical personnel reported to police that they had been called to the home for a report of a miscarriage, and they began treating the mother. While they were there, however, they discovered a newborn baby, still alive, in the trash. They transported both the mother and the baby to a local hospital via ambulance, a spokesman said.

Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators were called to the scene. Detectives learned that after the baby was born, it allegedly was placed in the trash, the spokesman said. According to the investigation, the parents then allegedly waited over an hour to call for help. On Friday, February 23, the investigation led to the arrest of both parents for Attempted First Degree Murder, the spokesman said.

Thelma Kirkland and Carl Hall were both arrested and booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center.

This investigation is still ongoing, and no other details are available at this time.
