Gun laws in Louisiana

Acadia Parish -

The Florida school shooting is raising many questions on gun ownership and control. Amid the debate, KATC is taking a closer look at gun laws here in Louisiana.

"To buy a firearm brand new and you're at a local business, you have to do a federal background check to get approval for that," Acadia Parish Sheriff K.P. Gibson said.

While you have to go through a background check to purchase a gun in stores, it's not required if you buy it from an individual private seller.

"If you're buying a gun from an individual, currently Louisiana doesn't have a requirement for any type of check," Gibson said. "What we do encourage is to bring the gun unloaded and open up to local law enforcement and ask to see if they could do a check on the gun. Most departments do a registration, where they enter the gun, date of purchase and so forth. We also encourage people if you're buying a firearm second hand that you also do a bill of sale.
It shows you the date of that transaction occurring should something have happened to the gun prior to you owning it."

You can conceal carry or open carry your gun once it's purchased. However, there is a difference between the two. You can open carry as soon as you get the gun, but there's a process to conceal

"It's usually a one day class about 8 hours," Gibson said. "Some of it is lecture. Some of it is actual shooting on the firing range. You learn about the laws and where you can't carry it. You learn a lot about the dos and don'ts of conceal carry. You have to go through a background check, fingerprinting, and you have to do an application to obtain your permit."
