A Rapides Parish resource officer arrested a teacher aide who had a gun in her purse at school.

A spokesman for Sheriff William Earl Hilton said the school resource officer at J.I. Barron Sr. Elementary School and the school's administrators were alerted Wednesday afternoon that a teacher aide had a handgun in her purse.

They went to the classroom and asked Britta Burlew Fuqua, 31, of Pineville to show them her purse. She gave them the purse, and the resource officer found a small semi-automatic pistol in her purse. The officer rendered the gun safe and took Fuqua to the principal's office, where she was arrested for carrying a gun on school property. She was given a citation and the handgun was seized as evidence, the spokesman said. The gun, a .380, was loaded, but there wasn't a round in the chamber, the spokesman said.

“While there was probably no criminal intent and was probably a legitimate oversight, we cannot allow this to happen” said Sheriff William Earl Hilton.  “The safety and security of our children and our teachers is everyone’s responsibility.  However, the carrying of a firearm needs to be left to our trained School Resource Officers.”
