The Lake Charles Police Department issued a statement Thursday urging gun owners to stop leaving their weapons in their vehicles.

Since January 1, 27 vehicle burglaries have happened in the city in which a gun was stolen, a spokesman said.

Those firearms are then sold from person to person and eventually will be used to commit violent crimes, the spokesman said. They also could be used against police officers, he said.

It doesn't matter if you lock your vehicle, you still shouldn't leave a weapon in the vehicle, the spokesman said. Burglars are breaking into vehicles and looking for guns.

All gun owners also need to keep a list of the serial numbers on their firearms. This increases the chance that any gun that's recovered is restored to its owner, he said.
