Superintendent: Pellet gun found in backpack of 5-year-old student

Posted: Updated:

A five-year-old child brought a pellet gun to school today in St. Martin Parish.

The child is a student at Cecilia Primary School, which has grades Pre-K through 2.

The gun wasn't loaded, and it was found before school started in the child's back-pack, Superintendent Lottie Beebe said.

Here's her full statement:

I am reporting an incident that occurred this morning involving a 5-year-old student who brought a pellet/BB gun (pistol) to school; the unloaded BB/pellet gun was initially located in the student's booksack.  School administration immediately responded to the report.   District staff and law enforcement were called in to assist school administration to conduct an investigation.  Appropriate protocol was followed.  It is important to note this incident occurred at the start of the school day and school administration is to be commended for its prompt action.

In light of the most recent Florida school shooting, I am once again appealing to parents for their assistance.  Please have conversations with your child or children regarding the serious consequences of bringing a weapon of any kind to school and check
booksacks, etc. before students come to school.

We take these incidents very seriously. Today, a group of school officials met to discuss school safety concerns. Various solutions were discussed, but ultimately, the first line of defense begins with parents.  Parents must be proactive and involved.
