Although they all hope they never need it, officials in St. Landry Parish have come together to plan for a school shooting.

"In light of the tragedies that have been occurring across the country, this is greatly needed," said Opelousas Mayor Reggie Tatum. "Instead of being reactive, we need to be proactive. We need to have a plan in place where it's like second nature to us. The only way to do that is for us to all work together and come together as a team."

This morning the group met to discuss plans, and hold a press conference. Among those at the event were law enforcement, medical personnel, school personnel, business leaders and various elected officials.

"This is all about the safety of our kids," said Opelousas Police Chief Donald Thompson. "We cannot sit here and say it won't happen in Opelousas. We hope it doesn't. But if it does, we can all be on the same page, the same team. We need to come together to unify and do what needs to be done to save lives."

Thompson said he hopes that anyone who sees something that might cause concern would report it to law enforcement, but it's not always possible to prevent these events.

"If a person has it own their mind to do something, it's hard for us to stop it, but if it happens we can eliminate other injuries and fatalities," he said. "We want to educate the public. We're not just sitting back and thinking it won't happen here. This is why we're meeting this morning, and moving on to the next steps, to plan and train, train, train."

The plan is for Cover Six Training Academy will conduct active shooter drills at St. Landry Parish schools. The Church Point business offers training for people to prepare or train in advance for an active shooter event.
