Acadia Parish works to straighten kinks in trash collection system

Posted: Updated:
CROWLEY, La. -

In Acadia Parish, a new trash collection program has not gone smoothly in its first weeks. Some residents have had their trash cans collected but have not received the new ones. Others are still using the old ones.

Neighbors in Crowley say for three weeks they've left their trash cans outside with hopes they'll be replaced.

There hasn't been much communication from the parish or the waste company and they still don't.

We caught up with KATC's own Tracy Wirtz, a Crowley resident, sharing the concern many in the city are asking.

"It's not trash day and there are green trash cans everywhere which has kind of become the staple for the last three weeks. We don't know what's going on in terms of when are they going to come replace these," says Wirtz.

Three weeks into a trash can replacement program the Parish Police Jury is trying to speed these along, meeting with Waste Connections Inc., the company behind this project.

"We had issues with them putting out cans, picking up cans and of course there were cans being picked up that weren't getting replaced, cans getting picked up and nobody knew where they went," says David Savoy, the Acadia Parish Police Jury president.

He says they've come up with a solution. They'll work on getting new cans to all of those residents who have none. Then starting next week, they'll have a convoy of trucks working to make sure everyone has transitioned to the new system. You're asked to put your old trash can out on the day you usually have pick up.

"They're going to pick up cans and put out cans immediately one crew following another on the trash day on the day they pick up your trash. So if they pick up your trash on Monday, the trucks will be there on Monday behind the trash truck putting cans and picking up cans," says Savoy.

The waste company says the process should go smoothly, but if it's mid-April and you still don't have a new trash can, it's time to give them a call.
