What's Your Story: Crooked Creek - Evangeline Parish

Posted: Updated:

For this week's "What's Your Story," the dart sent us out to Crooked Creek and it wasn't long before we met Kim Ortego the guardian of the Crooked Creek Recreational Area, the only parish run recreation area in the state.

Tucked up in northern Evangeline Parish it gives the community a quiet place to retreat. Donated to the Evangeline Parish Police Jury, the group owns and operates the park for the enjoyment of all.

Ortego says the park has been around for a long time, "a lot of people in the community raised their kids here. I know we raised our kids here."

The park sits on the edge of a 400-acre lake that Ortego says was actually dug to be a reservoir. A natural beach slopes into the lake and gives people a place to relax. In the water itself, a true treasure sits beneath the surface, fish.

But the recreational fishing and the park offerings are not the only draws to visitors. The park also acts as a refuge for Louisiana's wildlife and Ortego says that a pair of eagles calls Crooked Creek home. And by the sound of it, their home is in good hands with Ortego and those who are working to keep the park in its best condition.

"We came out here a lot as kids and we want to see it stay so I want to keep it for other generations'" remarks Ortego.

There are improvements Kim would like to see for the park. And together, both he, his staff, and the community are working to make those improvements happen.

Next week, the dart takes "What's Your Story" to Acadia Parish.
