LAFAYETTE – No. 16 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball prevailed in an extra-innings battle with No. 2 Florida in the series finale of a Top 25 showcase at Lamson Park.
Pitcher Summer Ellyson tossed 11 strong innings in the circle and freshman Casidy Chaumont delivered the walk-off home run in a 4-3 win over the visiting Gators in 11 innings.
After Louisiana (7-2) evened the score at 2-all, Ellyson prevented the Gators (8-1) from placing a runner in scoring position from the fourth through ninth innings as she dueled against Aleshia Ocasio.
UF pulled ahead momentarily in the 11th inning off a two-out double. Kara Gremillion fouled off five straight pitches of a nine-pitch at bat to bring Chaumont to the plate with the go-ahead run in the bottom half. Five pitches later, on a 2-2 count, Chaumont cleared the fence in left center to bring the crowd of 2,040 into a frenzy.
Ellyson improved to 3-0 and collected her first career win over a ranked foe. She scattered eight hits over five times working through the Gators’ batting order.
The Ragin’ Cajuns, who defeated Oregon State on Thursday, closed the week with a 2-2 mark over a four-game span against teams listed in both national polls.
LEADING THE RAGIN’ CAJUNS
Alissa Dalton (2-for-5) and Gremillion (2-for-4) each had a two-hit game for Louisiana.
Dalton, who put the Cajuns on the board in the third inning with a two-run single off of Kelly Barnhill, joined Chaumont in multiple-RBI efforts.
Dalton and Chaumont led the defensive effort behind Ellyson each tallying five assists. Louisiana collected 18 assists in a clean effort in the field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Florida opened the scoring in the second inning on a two-out single from Amanda Lorenz. Louisiana returned the favor in the third inning off the bat of Dalton.
The teams were at a stalemate over the next 5-1/2 innings with no threats of scoring until the bottom of the ninth when the Cajuns had runners at second and third with one out.
Ocasio walked to start the 11th inning and later stole second before being brought home on a double by Hannah Adams, which gave Florida a brief 3-2 lead. Ocasio started the bottom half with a strikeout, but Gremillion’s battle at the plate triggered the response from Louisiana.
No. 16 Louisiana hosts the 32nd Annual Louisiana Classics tournament Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 22-25 at Lamson Park. The event wraps up a season-opening homestand that began back on Feb. 8 with the Mardi Gras Classic.
The Ragin’ Cajuns open play in the Louisiana Classics on Thursday at 4 p.m. against in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana.
