Breaux Bridge family loses everything in house fire

Posted: Updated:

A Breaux Bridge couple and their grandchildren lost everything in a devastating house fire. Now, they're working to pick up the pieces of what is left of their home.

"I got up, went to the kitchen, saw the fire, took a moment to register and then ran and woke my grandparents up," says Kaylee Rogers, who first noticed the fire.

In just minutes, the home where Kathi and Tony White raised their children and grandchildren, was filled with smoke.

"We got out. It was horrible. And we waited for the fire department," says Rogers.

The house and everything inside was a complete loss.

"In your life, you help people, and it makes you feel good, but you never think it's going to be you who needs help," says Kathi White, who had lived in the home for 23 years.

Without really any material possessions, Kathi, her husband, their children, and grandchildren are holding onto what they do have: family and faith.

"It's hard, but we're not alone, and this is what prayer does. People come out and help and do whatever they can on their days off. That's what prayer does," says White.

Prayers, each other and a few of their home's remaining wooden beams are the foundation on which this family will rebuild their lives.

"We have to rebuild something. We have to come back here. We love this little town. It's where we should be," says White.

The family, who did not have insurance on the home, created a GoFundMe account, asking for help to pay for rebuilding. An account, under the names Tony and Kathi White, has been set up by the family at Midsouth Bank to accept donations.
