RAGIN' CAJUNS SOFTBALL: 16th-ranked Ragin' Cajuns Top Oregon State in Midweek Tilt
LAFAYETTE – No. 16 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball increased its season-opening win streak to six games with a 9-4 win over Oregon State on Thursday at Lamson Park.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (6-0) answered an early run from the Beavers (4-2) with a string of eight unanswered to take control.
Summer Ellyson started and tossed four strong innings, then Kylee Jo Trahan closed out OSU with a strikeout in a bases-loaded situation in the fifth inning and a pair of scoreless frames afterwards.
Lexie Comeaux’s first home run of the young season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning, upped the lead to 8-1 and put the exclamation point on Louisiana’s commanding triumph.
LEADING THE RAGIN’ CAJUNS
Comeaux and Kourtney Gremillion each posted a team-leading two RBI. Gremillion’s first run driven in brought home the first of three runs plated in the bottom of the second which marked an answer to the Beavers’ early strike.
Alissa Dalton continued her hot streak at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a steal of home in the sixth inning. The sophomore transfer from Oklahoma is now 10-for-13 at the plate the past three outings.
Kara Gremillion was 2-for-4 at the plate to collect her team-leading fourth multiple-hit game of the season. She was one of three Cajuns with two runs scored (Dalton and Comeaux).
Ellyson notched four strikeouts in her 4-2/3 innings of work. She kept OSU in check while the Cajuns built their lead, retiring six of seven batters faced over the third and fourth innings.
Trahan earned the save by ending an additional scoring threat from OSU in the fifth inning and allowing only one hit over 2-1/3 innings of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Oregon State struck first on a solo homer from Missy Nunes in the second inning, Louisiana responded in the bottom half with three quick runs. Kourtney Gremillion singled home Comeaux (leadoff walk), Brittany Rodriguez executed a squeeze bunt for the go-ahead tally and Dalton added an RBI single.
- The Ragin’ Cajuns kept the pressure on in the third as Kara Gremillion led off with a single and scored on an errant throw. A sacrifice bunt and subsequent squeeze bunt pushed home pinch runner Casidy Chaumont to extend the lead to 5-1.
- Comeaux’s home run was the highlight of another crooked number for Louisiana in the fourth inning. OSU sliced into the deficit in the fifth inning off Shelby Weeks’ three-run home run and threatened for more until Trahan diffused a bases loaded scenario.
No. 16 Louisiana faces No. 2 Florida (6-0) in a Top 25 weekend set at Lamson Park. The series starts with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and concludes Sunday in a 1 p.m. single game.
