In a game where it was at times tough for either team to find a basket, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team came out on the short end of a three-point heartbreaker, losing to the Texas State Bobcats, 56-53, at the Cajundome on Thursday night.

The loss, snapping a three-game winning streak for the Cajuns, dropped their record to 13-12 (8-5 SBC), while Texas State won their first game against the Cajuns since Mar. 2, 2017 and it improves their record to 17-8 (10-4 SBC).

Senior Simone Fields finished with a double-double, 16 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Troi Swain added 11 points and five rebounds.  Louisiana did own the paint outscoring the Bobcats 32-16 through the game and they held the Bobcats to 34 percent shooting from the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED (First Quarter): Texas State came out of the game on fire, and over the first two minutes of the quarter they went on a scorching 10-0 run to jump on the Cajuns.  But Louisiana head coach Garry Brodhead called a timeout to calm his team down, and the Cajuns responded coming right back at the Bobcats.

Led by Swain, who had two baskets, one assist and one block over a one and a half stretch, the Cajuns went off on what would become a 11-0 run to put the Cajuns ahead by one point with the score sitting at 11-10 just past the three-minute mark.  That 11-0 run would turn into a 17-6 run for the Cajuns as they finished the quarter having caused five Texas State turnovers to take a 17-16 lead into the second period.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Quarter): The second quarter was about one thing for the Cajuns, free throws.  And they hit 7 for 12 from the line (58 percent) to complement their strong defense through the quarter.  Swain made 5 of 6 from the line through the quarter to lead Louisiana at the charity stripe and she was a big part of the Cajuns success at the line in the period.

The Bobcats shot 32 percent through the first five minutes of the quarter while they failed to score a point over the final three minutes and 40 seconds of the half as the Cajuns used that defensive effort to push their lead to five points as the score sat at 28-23 when the halftime break arrived.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Third Quarter): Texas State came out on a 5-0 run, but the Cajuns ended that with a basket from freshman Skyler Goodwin when she followed her own miss to put the Cajuns up by two.  At that point things went quiet for the Cajuns as they had a scoring drought through the majority of the first five minutes of the quarter as the Bobcats went on a 9-2 run.

Sophomore Kimberly Burton snagged a steal and hit a coast-to-coast layup to end the scoring drought for the Cajuns, and two back-to-back baskets from Fields cut the Bobcats lead to three points.  The score sat at 43-40, Texas State then hit layup to extend their lead to five points and the score sat with the Bobcats on top, 45-40 as the game moved into the final quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Fourth Quarter): The fourth quarter was a back and forth affair, but it started slowly as neither scored over the first two plus minutes of the quarter.  That ended with a free throw from Texas State, and the Cajuns followed that with an 11-0 run to take back the lead and they jumped ahead of the Bobcats by five points, with the score sitting at 51-46 when the clock hit 4:08.  But the Bobcats flipped the script on Louisiana, as the Cajuns got into a bit of a drought over the final four minutes making only one basket as Texas State finished the game stretching out a 10-2 run to pull ahead of Louisiana.  Texas State made two free throws to extend their lead to three points, with 20 seconds remaining.

The Cajuns had a chance to tie things as they came down the floor looking to take the final shot, but Louisiana missed both of their three-point attempts that they took, and the clock ran out on the Cajuns as they dropped the game in a heartbreaker, losing 56-53.

NOTEWORTHY: Fields' double-double is the first of the season for the senior; Fields passed Bernadette Griffin for fifth place on the Cajuns All-Time Career Rebounding List and she has 659 career rebounds.

UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana returns to the Cajundome on Saturday, Feb. 17 when they welcome the UT-Arlington Lady Mavericks in what will be the Cajuns Pink Game Presented by Lourdes Imaging Center and tip for that game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
