Cajuns In Season Openers
Louisiana is 16-7 in season openers since head coach Tony Robichaux took the helm in 1995. The Ragin' Cajuns have opened the season in the state of Texas three of the last seven years.
Texas owns a 29-6 edge in the all-time series despite the Cajuns having won three of the last four meetings. Louisiana picked up a strong 8-1 victory over the Longhorns in the midweek a year ago in a game that was played in Sugar Land, Texas.
The Cajuns are 3-1 against Texas under Robichaux with three of the four meetings coming at neutral sites.
With senior Gunner Leger redshirting this season, the Ragin' Cajuns will turn to sophomore right-hander Jack Burk to take the mound on Friday night at Texas. Juniors Nick Lee and Hogan Harris round out the weekend rotation for the Cajuns.
Offensively, Louisiana returns five of nine starters from a year ago led by senior Kennon Fontenot who hit .270 with a team-best 13 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 29 RBI in 2017. True freshman Hayden Cantrelle will make his debut at shortstop against the Longhorns, while returners Handsome Monica, Tyler Stover and Todd Lott all are expected to play big roles this season.
The Longhorns are coming off of a trip to the NCAA Super Regionals a year ago that saw them come one win away from the College World Series. Texas will send a trio of right-handers to the mound in the series with 23 combined starts a year ago. Nolan Kingham is the veteran of the group posting a 2.84 ERA and a 10-4 record in 13 starts in 2017.
Offensively, the Longhorns hit .252 as a club last year and will have to replace three of their top four hitters. Todd Austin leads the returning starters from 2017 after hitting .276 with seven doubles, a home run and 19 RBI in 48 games.
Following the Texas series, the Ragin' Cajuns head to Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. Louisiana opens the 2018 home slate on Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. against Wright State in the first of three games at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
