Tourists flock to Kaplan for Mardi Gras

Posted: Updated:

The Chic-A-La-Pie parade rolled through the streets of Kaplan and the people watching the parade weren't just from Kaplan, they were from all over the world.

Kids were yelling "throw me something mister!" as the floats passed by.

The all-female krewe had about a dozen floats and some marching bands to get the party going.

"Yeah it's a great parade I mean it's very family friendly, people get really creative with the floats and that's what I like to see. I like to see the creativity," said Krystle Harrington, who traveled from Seattle to Kaplan for Mardi Gras with her friend Jayson Hood. Harrington was dressed up in costume from head to toe. After about an hour they collected several throws and beads.

"I think they just like throwing stuff at us," said Hood.

Fun costumes and tons of beads are just part of the tradition.

For Madison Prejean who just moved to Kaplan from Australia, this is her new favorite holiday. It's her first Mardi Gras and she said her favorite part about the parades is, "collecting beads and having fun."

Another parade go-er, Cole Touchet, said his favorite things about Mardi Gras are, "the beads, beer, barbecue, everything."

Some families like Touchet's  have been coming to the parade for years

"Every year since I was about 4 or 5 years old," said Touchet.

Whether you're dodging beads or trying to catch them all, families here are letting the good times roll.
