While investigators offer reward for 2017 slaying, family says current suspect is innocent

Evangeline Parish -

A Texas mother is demanding answers from the Evangeline Parish District Attorney and demanding that her son be released from jail.

Tiberrious Wilson is facing a murder charge in the shooting death of Kathy Weston. However, the District Attorney is offering a reward for more information on who's responsible for the death, and that has Wilson's mother questioning why her son is in jail.

Nearly one year later after Weston died in a shootout, her picture hangs on flyers across Ville Platte. Those flyers ask people with information about her death to speak with investigators. However, while that investigation continues, Tiberrious Wilson remains in jail.

"It's hard for me," Tamika Wilson said. "It hurts that they blasted my son on here and our family."

Shortly after the shooting, Wilson was incarcerated on a $1.4 million bond. Wilson was booked on warrants for second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property, illegal use of a weapon or dangerous instrument and carrying of a firearm by a convicted felon. The District Attorney's Office charged him with those crimes through a bill of information in May 2017.

However, Wilson's family is questioning why he's still locked up while investigators offer a reward for information.

"You have my son in here all these months and then you come out with an award saying you need to find the person," Tamika said. "You had him in jail and I just want to know what's going on. I just want answers."

She added, "If you say you have the person that you're supposed to have then why you have a reward?"

KATC reached out to District Attorney Trent Brignac multiple times and went to the Evangeline Parish courthouse to ask Brignac about the investigation and to check on Wilson's status. However, his secretary told us he wasn't available. He has not returned our phone calls.

According to investigative reports filed by the Ville Platte police officer who worked the Weston homicide, a second victim and an eyewitness said they saw Wilson at the scene of the crime. However, those documents show that officers have no other evidence tying him to the murder, including evidence that he fired the gun.

"They continually try to paint him as a monster because of the things people posted ," Wilson's girlfriend Ladonna Holmes said. "Hearsay doesn't prove that someone is guilty, and I know 100 percent that this man is innocent."

For now, Wilson's mother awaits an answer from the district attorney in hopes that her son's name will one day be cleared.

"I'm praying that they release my son from jail and that Kathy Weston family gets justice," Tamika Wilson said. "I hope they find the right person who did it, because it's not my son."
