Vermilion Parish School Board complete once again

Posted: Updated:

The Vermilion Parish School Board once again has eight members.

Monday night, the board appointed an interim board member to replace former president, Tony Fontana, who resigned in the aftermath of teacher Deyshia Hargrave's arrest.

By a four to three vote, Whitney "Jean" Broussard was selected to be the new interim board member for District E.

Already aware of the very issue that put him in this seat, Broussard says teacher pay is something he'll have to address as a school board member.

"Because it was proposed to the board a couple of meetings ago because I can take a look at it and crunch numbers and see if it is a realistic thing to do. Whether it would be cutting the budget we already have or proposing a new tax," said Broussard.

Broussard served 20 years in the Air Force and was also an adjunct professor at Northwood University in Michigan. He also spent most of his career in accounting and finance professions, hoping that background can help in his new position.

With Hargrave in attendance, Broussard also discussed the board's previous conduct.

"If we can explain to each other what our passion is for whatever we're voting for, whatever we want to push, whatever we want to do, and keep an open mind instead of having some sort of agenda, I think we'll be much better off," said Broussard,

Broussard says one of his first orders of business, "The 8-member board. You're always going to well not always but there's the potential to have a four against four. So what I'm going to suggest is to have a member at large, not necessarily splitting up the districts or creating more districts but have a member at large for the tie breaker."
