Church Point Police Dept. release statement on arrest of OPD officer

Posted: Updated:

A police officer was arrested Thursday in Church Point following a traffic stop.

Church Point Police Chief Albert Venable released the following statement Monday morning on the arrest of Opelousas Police Officer Shawn Taylor:

"The arrest of Opelousas Police Dept. Officer Shawn Taylor stemmed from a routine traffic stop, his arrest was not in any way a result of the illegal window tint of loud music violation. The arrest was a result of disturbing the peace, where Mr. Tayor was cursing, hollering and being belligerent to the arresting officer at the time of the traffic stop. "Mr. Taylor has had prior run-ins with the Church Point Police Department on four different occasions for similar incidents. Chief Venable will be consulting with Chief Thompson and no further questions will be answered at this time."

Taylor was arrested on charges of no proof of insurance in a vehicle, illegal window tint, unnecessary noise from a vehicle and disturbing the peace, according to the court clerk.

Opelousas Police Chief Donald Thompson said the officer's status of employment will be determined pending an internal investigation.
