One killed; 1 injured during Jeanerette Mardi Gras parade

JEANERETTE -

One person is dead and one person is injured after a shooting broke out at a Mardi Gras parade in Jeanerette today. 

At 4:00 p.m., law enforcement officers responded to a report of a shooting in Jeanerette and discovered two male victims were shot near the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Monnot Road, according to a spokesman for the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office.

One of the victims was shot in the chest, and the other victim was shot in the leg, the spokesman says. 

The victim who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest was airlifted to a Lafayette hospital where he later died.

The other victim was transported to a local hospital. The spokesman didn't comment on his condition. 

The Jeanerette City Marshal has requested the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office take over the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.
