Lafayette firefighters investigate fire at downtown business

Posted: Updated:

The inside of a downtown Lafayette business is badly damaged after a fire started in its stock room area this morning.

No one was injured, fire investigators say.

At 10:34 a.m., Lafayette firefighters responded to Greenwood Shoes in the 400 block of Jefferson Street on a report of heavy smoke coming from the business.

Once on scene, crews entered the shore store and extinguished the fire within 30 minutes.

An apartment, located on the top of Greenwood Shoes, sustained light smoke damage. A spokesman for the Lafayette Fire Department says the business was closed when the fire started, and no one was inside either the business or apartment.

Adjacent buildings sustained minor smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
