Louisiana looks to get the season sweep against the ULM Saturday

Posted: Updated:

PRESS RELEASE

LAFAYETTE – This weekend, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team makes the short trip north, to Monroe, La., to face off with, for the second time this season, their in-state rivals, the ULM Warhawks, with the game scheduled for a noon tip on Saturday, Feb. 3.

MAKE SURE TO TUNE IN: Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with Drew Fellios handling the play-by-play, ex-WNBA star Lindsey Whalen providing the color and Whitney Haworth on the sidelines.  A link to the game can be found on the RaginCajuns.com home page and links will be provided on twitter and Facebook as well, for anyone who can't make the trip up north.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE CAJUNS: In their last game played, on Saturday, Jan. 27, the Cajuns lost at home, 62-55, to the Troy Trojans, despite holding the Trojans to 21 points under their scoring average of roughly 82 points per game.  Sophomore Malachi-Seraphin Williams led the Cajuns in scoring with 14 points off the bench, and freshman Ty'Reonne Doucet had a career high, and team season high, three blocks in the game, but overall Louisiana shot only 33 percent as they lost their final game in the month of January.

CAJUNS HOLD THE ADVANTAGE: Louisiana last faced off with ULM at the Cajundome on Jan. 13, and the Cajuns protected their home court beating the Warhawks, 63-55.  That win on Jan. 13, was the seventh straight win the Cajuns have had against ULM and a win on Saturday would make eight straight for the Cajuns against their in-state rivals.

In that Jan. 13 matchup at the Cajundome the Cajuns were led by 16 points from senior Simone Fields and 14 points from senior Nekia Jones.  Jones was 4 for 7 from beyond to arc, but where the Cajuns made their money in that game was in the paint, outscoring the Warhawks 34-20 down low and they got 25 points from their bench, where ULM only got 10 points from their subs.

CAJUNS CRACKING THE ALL-TIME BOOKS: Several Cajuns women are posed to move up on a few different career all-time lists in the Louisiana record books.  Already sitting in 10th place after passing Yolanda Johnson at Little Rock on Dec. 29, Fields sits 29 points away from moving into ninth place on the all-time scoring list.  Fields also sits one rebound away from moving into sole possession of seventh place on the all-time rebounding list, and she'll pass Anne DeMahy who's she's currently tied with in seventh place.

Senior Troi Swain, has already cracked into the career 3-pt field goal percentage list, with her career numbers being at .317 percent placing her seventh on that list.  But she's soon to be joined by Jones on that same list, as the Cajuns senior is only eight 3-pt field goal attempts away from reaching the minimum 175 attempts needed to be eligible to the list.  For her career she's shooting 34 percent from beyond the arc which right now would place her third on the list.

WHAT THE WARHAWKS BRING: ULM enters the game sitting 11th in the conference, with their record being 4-16 (1-8 SBC) and they haven't won a game since beating Coastal Carolina in Monroe on Jan. 4.  As a team they're shooting 39 percent scoring just under 60 points per game at 59.1 ppg.  While teams are scoring just about 70 points per game against them with the average sitting at 69.8 points per game.

While as a team the Warhawks are struggling to score, their senior Gabriella Cortez is not.  She's second in the conference averaging 17.1 points per game while shooting 47 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the arc.  She also leads the Warhawks in rebounding averaging 5.8 boards per game.  Right behind her in rebounding is Arsula Clark, who's leading the team in assists with 47 (2.4 apg) and she's averaging 5.7 boards per game.

HOW TO LISTEN/FOLLOW THE GAME: Besides the game being broadcast on ESPN3, the game will also be on the radio, with ESPN1420 carrying the game and Jay Walker will handle the play-by-play.  Live stats will be provided as well by the ULM athletic department and links for that can be found on twitter and on the RaginCajuns.com website.

FOLLOWING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS: Follow the Cajuns on twitter @RaginCajunsWBB for updates during the game, along with links to follow the action both on the radio and on TV.  A link to the games' recap will be posted as well following the conclusion of the action.
