Clean up crews work to end long time mess on Lajaunie Road

LAFAYETTE, La. -

A Lafayette road with a reputation as a place to dump trash is becoming costly for the city and the people who live along it. Nearly 20 years ago LCG changed the name of Larabee Pit Road to Lajaunie Road and began efforts to clean the area. That effort continues to this day.

"I mean, tires, refrigerators, washing machines... We find the darned-est things down this road, you'd be surprised," says Monique Calais, who lives on Lajaunie Road.

This time, the surprise was a pleasant one. Calais looked out her window to see a clean-up crew picking up the trash on her street.

"Public services, the sheriff's department, using their inmate crews, LCG Streets Department and Environmental Quality are all working together to do a pretty major clean up on Lajaunie Road, which runs along the Vermilion River," says Bess Foret, Environmental Quality Manager for Lafayette.

Calais, who has lived on the road for 13 years, says this clean-up effort is long overdue, and she's already taken matters into her own hands, resorting to time consuming and costly efforts to keep the space clean.

"I got a dumpster just to keep it clean right here, because I like to keep my yard clean. That's nasty, I just had to clean by the bayou. The trash that they had thrown on my property, it was ridiculous," says Calais.

LCG officials agree. This trash dumping is out of control, and it's illegal.

"Cleanups like this, though they're great, this is tax payer dollars at work that would be so much better utilized doing something else other than having to pick up," says Foret.

They plan to put more money to use in hopes to end the mess by placing motion cameras and license plate readers in the area to catch those breaking the law.
