St. Landry Crime Stoppers program has been awarded the 2017 Best Crime of the Week for both television and radio.

The program won in the population below 250,000, and beat out every other program in the country in that category.

The only other Louisiana Crime Stoppers program to win a national award was in New Orleans several years ago.

Major Eddie Thibodeaux who serves as the spokesman for Crime Stoppers stated that the Crime Stoppers USA board looked at the program and based their decision on the following criteria:  contribution to public awareness, originality of idea or concept, quality and excellence, impact on community, and results obtained.

Stephanie Johnson, president of the Crime Stoppers board, said that Thibodeaux came up with the new format idea, which spotlights the investigators who are working the cases, as well as the crime itself.

“Coordinators are merely spokespersons, airing the men and women of law enforcement, the real heroes of law enforcement who actually solve the cases through the tips of crime stoppers should get most of the credit," Thibodeaux said. "The media deserves credit but most of all the tipsters of crime stoppers, without them cases would be harder to solve.”

The St. Landry Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week is taped by KATC then aired on their channel on Wednesdays at 5:10pm and 10:10pm then on Thursday’s Good Morning Acadiana at 6:10am.  KATC also downloads the Crime of the Week on their website and Facebook page.  In order to serve the people of Acadiana, News 15 KLAF has teamed up with KATC, and KLAF now airs the St. Landry spot, produced by KATC on their Thursday newscasts.

Major Thibodeaux has broadened the reach of the St. Landry Crime Stoppers Facebook page, where you can see the Crime of the Week, daily arrest and call log reports, press releases, public service announcements, among other information.

Thibodeaux also tapes radio spots for the Crime of the Week at FM101.1 KBON, which shares the spots with FM105.5 KEUN. He also tapes the Crime of the Week on Thursday at News Talk FM 96.5 KPEL.

“The Crime of the Week is a public service to the viewers of KATC, KLAF, KBON, KEUN, KPEL, and the Eunice News.  I would personally like to thank the media outlets for giving up valuable air time spotlighting crimes in and around Acadiana," said Sheriff Bobby Guidroz. "If law enforcement, the media, and the citizens all work together, more cases can be solved.”

“The main goal of crime stoppers is to spotlight a crime, receive ANONYMOUS tips, and pay out cash for information leading to the arrest," said Deputy Sheryl Badeaux who serves as the crime stoppers administrative assistant.  "You can help by calling the tip line at 337-948-TIPS (8477); tip online at stlandrycrimestoppers.com, or by downloading the P3 app on any mobile device and tip anonymously using your mobile device."
