The US Coast Guard says it is responding to an oil spill which occurred near White Lake on Tuesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report from the National Response Center at 11:30 a.m., that approximately 1,260 gallons of oil spilled from a flow line at an oil production facility into the wetlands adjacent to White Lake.

Officials say the responsible party is Peak Operating Company. Environmental Safety and Health, a local oil spill response organization, has been contracted to conduct cleanup operations. Personnel from Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Morgan City and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality also responded and are investigating the incident.

A containment boom has been deployed around the spill to prevent oil from entering adjacent waterways, according to a release. Clean up efforts have already begun in the area.

Crews say the source of the spill has been secured, but a cause is still under investigation.
