Lafayette High students preparing for college with financial aid forum

Posted: Updated:

Lafayette Parish freshman, sophomores, and juniors and their parents are now more knowledgeable about financial aide and things they need to know to prepare for college.

Several parents attended the meeting to attain information for their children, one mother, Desha Lee, said college planning is overwhelming and she will take all the help she can get.

"I have already done it with one, and things have changed especially with what's going on with TOPS. So we need all the information we can so they can have a successful high school and college career," Lee said.

The purpose of the forum is to make sure students are prepared as they possibly can be before they turn their tassels at high school graduation.

For one first generation college students, Olivia Derouen, her family believes nights like this give them a kickstart in the right direction.

"We came out because my parents wanted to know more information about college and what type of things they needed to plan, as well as giving me information because I'm still in thought of what I want to major in," Derouen said.

The possibility of more cuts to Louisiana's TOPS program, is another reason some are making efforts to figure out financial aid.

College and Career Coach, Dana McIntyre, believes there is a way for every student to attend college.

"Well there has been a lot of change with TOPS and what students need to realize is that money is out there. They just need to work for it and they need to become better candidates for scholarships," McIntyre said.

Even taking TOPS out of the plan, Lee's daughter said she is going to do whatever it takes to be successful.

"It's helping me because its showing me that with the success I can be like them and be better than them with the progression of the society and technology as of now. I can be successful and live my life the way I want to," Lee said.
