The victim in the Monday night fatal shooting in New Iberia has been identified as a 27-year-old New Iberia man.

At 11:44 pm on Monday, deputies responded to a shooting at an apartment complex in the 900 block of Mississippi Street, according to Captain Wendell Raborn, spokesman for the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office.

Neighbors say they woke up to the gunshots.

"I heard gunshots. Instantly I jumped out of bed, hit the floor and it was all kind of chaos. And this is something that's happened before," says neighbor Trellis Brown.

Deputies located a vehicle with multiple bullet holes and inside Kahidrick Mitchell, 27, was found with several gunshot wounds, stated Rayburn. Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene by the investigator from the Iberia Parish Coroner's Office.

The case remains under investigation. While sheriff's deputies look for suspects, neighbors look for change.

"I'm from New Iberia, I love my city, I was born and raised here, but we as one we need to really really come together and we need to get on one accord. prayers do work but prayer is not going to work alone and we need to get on that," says Trellis Brown.

Call Iberia Crime Stoppers at (337) 364-TIPS if you have any information on the shooting.
