Saturday showers cause flooding in Abbeville

ABBEVILLE -

With so much rain earlier today, some parts of Acadiana received localized street flooding.

The rising waters are causing issues for some neighborhoods and businesses in Abbeville.

The Sunbelt Lodge Motel and Vermilion Parish Chamber of Commerce were surrounded by water on Saturday.

Motel employees say they were fighting back water with towels Saturday morning.

"When it rains a lot on Meaux Lane on the back of us, it floods our parking lot. And when people are passing on the back road, it makes the water go into our rooms," said Sunbelt Lodge Motel manager Della Hardy.

Locals say flooding like this has only occurred since 2016 and believe it may be the result of recent new housing and businesses development. They also say they’ve noticed an increase in climate precipitation in the region in the last few years.

In 2016, water being pushed from traffic off of Meaux Lane caused about $100,000 worth of damage. The damage to the motel would've been worse if Hardy had not called the city early in the morning.

"It just about got into the rooms today from people passing on the road, but this is the first time that I've been here in thirty-five years that they blocked off the back street to Meaux Lane where no one could pass,” explained Hardy.

However, it was not only businesses affected by the water.

"The water was very high. It came up to my second step, and we had to move my car because water was going into my car," said Tiffany Hanks, who lives on Meaux Lane.

Another resident nearby had to be driven to his job and then later walk two miles home.

"I mean, my people couldn't get out of the subdivision here, the Abbeville subdivision, because it's been raining too hard. This is terrible, but you got to make the best of it,” said John Bryant.
