Although there's a smell in Baldwin today, it's not a gas leak, Fire Chief Lance Mire says.

Since natural gas is dangerous but it has not color or odor, a scent, similar to rotten eggs, is added to gas lines so leaks can be detected early.

That particular chemical — called mercaptan — leaked from a faulty valve, causing the smell in town, Mire said. He says the chemical is harmless and non-toxic.

The leak has been repaired, he said.

There's no gas leak and no danger right now, he said.
