Frosty start, sunny Thursday; wet Saturday still on tap

Posted: Updated:

After a frosty start in the mid-30s across Acadiana Thursday, expect lots of sunshine and pleasant winter temperatures reaching the lower 60s for the afternoon.

Enjoy the sunshine Thursday, as we won't see much until next Monday.

Clouds will be returning to the area Friday ahead of an area of surface low pressure that will develop in the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico into Saturday.

The low will likely stay well to the south and east of Acadiana, so mostly steady rains, perhaps an isolated rumble of thunder, is expected for most of our Saturday.

The system will likely give the area a good soaking with 1-2" in most spots, but isolated amounts, over a period of several hours, may see up to 3".

As this will be a longer duration steady rain event, there are no flooding or any severe weather concerns at this time.

Lingering clouds will persist across the area Sunday, and with breezy northerly winds and chillier air moving in.

And as a result, highs Sunday in the mid-upper 50s will likely feel cooler and more winter-like Sunday.

Sunshine will be back early next week with seasonable temperatures Monday and Tuesday.

Clouds should return for Wednesday, spoiling the opportunity locally for viewing the pre-dawn lunar eclipse, with rain and perhaps some storms a good bet for  next Thursday.

Behind next week's rain system system, colder, more winter-like air, should return to the area, with another arctic surge heading southward out of Canada...how much, if any of the coldest air we may or may not see remains up for debate at this point.

Today's models are less bullish on another arctic freeze locally, but we won't know anything definitive for at least another week!

With all that being said sub-freezing temperatures and another winter weather event may still be in the cards in the weeks ahead...we'll see!
