Flu running 'rampant' in Iberia Parish

Posted: Updated:

The US is in the midst of a flu epidemic, and some medical professionals in Acadiana say this is the worst flu outbreak they've ever seen.

"It's our busiest flu season ever...the strains of flu we're seeing this year are not covered by the flu shot but there is some evidence that shows taking the flu shot may decrease your response to the virus," says Frank Garber, a Nurse Practitioner at Iberia Urgent Care.

He says you can't be too safe, and it's not too late to get vaccinated.

"It's not too late to get the flu shot. As long as we're still having cold weather, we're still within flu season."

Washing your hands, keeping hydrated and trying not to touch your face are some of the other tips he gave. Also, if you plan to be near loved ones who are sick, wear a mask.

If you start to feel chills, body aches, fever, a cough or any combination of these symptoms, go to your primary care doctor or an urgent care or walk in clinic.
