A Thibodaux woman arrested for theft twice in one weekend claimed that her diabetes made her commit the crime, police say.

Police say the first incident occurred on January 15, 2018, when the suspect, Amy Stevens, went to a grocery store and stole two packs of ground meat, one pack of ribs and one pack of frozen fish by allegedly concealing the items in her purse.

Management reviewed the tape and according to police, Stevens was positively identified. She was located on January 20, 2018, at her home in Thibodaux. Police say Stevens denied taking the items and was placed under arrest. She was later released on a misdemeanor summons after being booked.

On Sunday, January 21, 2018, Stevens was stopped at another grocery store where she was allegedly seen concealing items under her jacket. Stevens then allegedly hit the manager in the face with her elbow, dropping four packs of steaks before fleeing.

Stevens also left behind her purse with ID card. After speaking with Stevens on the phone, she admitted to stealing the items but claimed it was because of her diabetes.

She was arrested at her house that same day. She was brought to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center where she is being held on a $1,000 bond.
