Eunice woman among 3 killed in weekend fires across La.

Posted: Updated:

A 67-year-old woman who was one of three killed in fires over the weekend in Louisiana has been identified.

Patsy Garcia, died in her Eunice apartment on W. Maple Ave. Sunday afternoon, according to fire officials.

The State Fire Marshal's Office investigated a number of fires over the weekend that resulted in serious injuries and three deaths, including Garcia's.

Since last Friday, Garcia, Benjamin Ford, 58, of Kenner; and Trinity Jones, 3, of Bastrop, died in house fires. Two others, including a one-year-old
girl and a 54-year-old woman were transported to area hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained in the fire.

Investigators determined that in three of the four fires, the homes had no working smoke alarms, according to a spokesman for the State Fire Marshal.  In the home that had a working smoke alarm, the victim suffered from a health condition that may have adversely affected her mobility, added the spokesman.

The State Fire Marshal's Office urges citizens to ensure that their homes are properly equipped with working smoke alarms.

Since the beginning of 2018, seventeen lives have been lost and six people were critically injured in residential structure fires.
