Press Release

ARLINGTON, TEXAS – Despite 13 second half points from senior Simone Fields, who finished with a team high 17 points, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team were done-in by two last second free throws by the UT-Arlington Lady Mavericks, to lose 63-61, here at the College Park Center.
The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Cajuns and it puts their record at 9-9 (4-2 SBC) while the win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Lady Mavs and it improves their record to 9-9 (3-4 SBC).
Fields added a team high seven rebounds to go along with her 17 points while sophomore Jasmine Thomas had nine points and five rebounds and senior Nekia Jones added nine points of her own.  Sophomore Kimberly Burton had a good second half to finish with seven points and three rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED (First Quarter): The game started slowly with both teams playing physical and when the first media timeout rolled around at the 5-minute mark of the quarter, both the Cajuns and the Lady Mavs were a foul off the bonus.
Off the break, the Cajuns hit a quick 5-0 burst, powered by a layup from Thomas and a three-point basket from freshman Skyler Goodwin, to make it 8-2 Cajuns.  But UTA responded to the Cajuns run, with a 9-0 run over three minutes to make it 11-8 in favor of the Lady Mavs.  Two trips to the line from Fields, where she split both times, brought the Cajuns within one point of UTA and the score sat at 11-10 with UTA taking the one point lead into the second quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Quarter): The second quarter's first five minutes were an exciting back and forth affair, with both teams trading ties.  A three-point basket from senior Kendra Howard made it 15-13 in favor of UTA and a layup from Fields tied things up at 15-15.
UTA took the lead on their next possession but Jones tied it right back up at 17-17 with a layup of her own.  Jones then finished off her own personal 5-0 run with a three-pointer to give the Cajuns a three-point lead.  But a 7-0 run from UTA once again put them ahead by four points.

The Lady Mavs hit a three-pointer at the 2:20 mark of the quarter, to put them back up by five points.  It turned out to be the last basket of the half, as the Lady Mavs took that five-point lead into the half with the score sitting at 27-22.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Third Quarter): Fields came out of the locker room to start the second half playing well scoring four points for the Cajuns, Burton joined her teammate with a strong start to the half nailing two layups and a free throw to help the Cajuns go on a 9-0 run to tie up the score at 31-31 midway through the period.
From there things went back and forth yet again but at 2:37 the Cajuns began a 7-3 run to finish the quarter, once again Fields and Burton were big.  Fields kicked off the run scoring five points and Burton added a basket of her own that she got after grabbing her own rebound and going back up to convert the basket.
UTA got to the line to cut into the Cajuns lead, but a free throw from Thomas under 30 seconds to go in the quarter, gave the Cajuns a two-point lead heading into the final period with the scoring sitting at 44-42.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Fourth Quarter): Louisiana couldn't truly pull away from the Lady Mavs, as any attempt to add significantly to their lead was met with UTA answering the Cajuns baskets.  Through the quarter the game was tied up four times, making it nine times through the game that things were tied up.
With 58 seconds left Thomas nailed a layup and that was followed up by another Fields basket, but UTA hit a three-point basket with 23 seconds left to give the Lady Mavs the lead with the score sitting at 61-60.  But Thomas drew a foul on the next possession and she went one of two from the line to tie the game up at 61-61, with the clock sitting at 11 seconds.
As the clock hit 11 seconds UTA came down the court and drew a foul that put them to the line as the clock hit four seconds.  UTA's Crystal Allen nailed both free throws to break the tie and take the game from the Cajuns with the final score sitting at 63-31.

NOTEWORTHY: Fields' third rebound in the third quarter was her 616th career rebound which moves her into eighth place all-time on the Cajuns all-time career rebounding list and she now has 620 career rebounds; Louisiana outscored UTA 28-22 in the paint and it's the third straight game the Cajuns have done that; The game was tied nine times in the game and the lead changed hands 10 times which are the most in both categories so far, this season.

UP NEXT FOR THE RAGIN' CAJUNS: Louisiana wraps up the Texas swing with a trip to San Marcos, Texas to play the Texas State Bobcats on Saturday, Jan. 20 with that game starting at 2 p.m.  The Cajuns will return to the Cajundome next weekend with South Alabama coming in on Thursday, Jan. 25 and Troy finishing up the Cajuns' quick home stand on Saturday, Jan. 27.
