Police: Woman dies after setting self on fire

LAKE CHARLES, La. -

An investigation into a woman's body found burned in a courtyard at a Lake Charles apartment complex reveals she died as a result of setting herself on fire, according to police.

Lake Charles Police were called to the Elmwood Apartment complex at 4:56 pm Wednesday in reference to a burned body. Officers found the woman burned and deceased with a gasoline located near her body, stated Lt. Kevin Kirkum, spokesman for the department.

Investigators determined the the 48-year-old victim was a resident of the apartment complex. Evidence located at the scene and in the woman's apartment indicated she died as a result of setting herself on fire, according to Kirkum. Detectives located video footage of the victim making the purchase of the gas can at a local store shortly before setting herself on fire. 

The Coroner's office has also concluded this was a self-inflicted incident, added the spokesman.
