Lafayette officer under investigation after domestic battery caught on video

Posted: Updated:

The Lafayette Police Department has opened an investigation into one of its own after a domestic violence incident surfaced in a YouTube video.

The video appears to show the officer hit a woman in the head with a cell phone as the two sat at a bar.

When asked to comment on the video, police spokesperson Cpl. Karl Ratcliff confirmed Wednesday that the man "has been placed on administrative leave and the incident is under investigation at this time."

The video appears to be recorded from a surveillance camera overlooking the bar. It's edited with text identifying the bar as a River Ranch business, with the recording said to have happened on New Year's Eve.

The anonymous user who uploaded the video has in recent years posted several critical of the police department – including a recording of one sergeant using a racial slur while on duty.

That recording led to the sergeant's 30-day suspension.
