Posted: Updated:

Baldwin firefighters have responded to several instances of oven fires from the self-cleaning function on ovens.

"Fortunately, they have all been minor in nature and we have been able to prevent it from getting worse," according to the departments Facebook page.

They suggest these tips for using the self-cleaning function:

•Always follow the manufacturer's instructions
•Clean out all big pieces of material and spills before starting the self-clean function
•Ensure there is no aluminum foil or pots inside the oven before starting the function
•Never leave the oven unattended while using this function
•If a fire does start, do not open the oven door (most ovens will not let you open it once the self-clean mode) Get out the house and call 911.
•Have working smoke alarms
